Dr Rory Care

Rory leads the meningococcal and pneumococcal group at NIBSC with Dr Caroline Vipond and Dr Hannah Chan. He is responsible for the release of polysaccharide and protein based vaccines. Rory’s primary research interests are the molecular mechanisms of meningococcal outer membrane vesicle (OMV) formation and its exploitation for the production of OMV for vaccines. In particular, structure and function of RmpM in outer membrane stability, OMV formation and antigen presentation of outer membrane proteins.

More recently, with the licensure of the first vaccine containing an OMV, Rory has been developing assays for safety and consistency testing of this novel vaccine. These assays will have further use for other complex vaccines both currently licensed and being developed for human use.

In addition, Rory oversees the panel of pneumococcal reference material including production of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Standards.

Rory has worked at NIBSC since 2003 after completing a Post-doctoral project on acute myeloid leukaemia at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.
