Collaborative working

NIBSC has a good network of collaborations with various stakeholders both nationally and worldwide, ensuring strong links with:

  • academia
  • other public health bodies
  • industry
  • internationally

Working with academia

Our scientific strategy includes  maintaining collaborations with a broad range of academic institutions, building on the many that already exist but also developing new ones. Our academic links are vital in our goal to provide a high-quality research and development programme and to attract external research funding.

We are seeking to develop closer ties with a small number of key academic centres to foster new research collaborations to build strength in emerging scientific areas, such as genomics and bioinformatics, and to participate in joint teaching and training.

A Memorandum of Understanding with University College London is already in place for work in advanced therapies, and we aim to develop further similar partnerships.

We use our academic links to attract scientifically strong candidates to work at NIBSC as part of our future investment programme.

Working with other public health bodies

Through our mission to support public health, it is essential that we work closely with our partner organisations in this area both in the UK and abroad.

As well as our role within the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, and as part of the Department of Health, we also work closely with other UK public health organisations such as:

  • Public Health England (PHE)
  • Medical Research Council (MRC)
  • National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR)
  • National Health Service (NHS)
  • National Blood Transfusion Services
  • National Measurement Office (NMO)

Working with the pharmaceutical industry

We also work with key organisations from the pharmaceutical industry, including:

  • British in-vitro Diagnostics Association (BIVDA)
  • manufacturers and suppliers

Working internationally

We work with international organisations to ensure strength in improving worldwide public health. Examples include:

  • World Health Organisation (WHO)
  • European Directorate for Quality of Medicines (EDQM)
  • European and United States Pharmacopoeias
  • European Medicines Control Laboratories
  • National Institute for Food and Drug Control (NIFDC) of China
  • International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH)
