NIBSC has appointed a new director, following the announcement of the forthcoming retirement of current Director Dr Stephen Inglis who has led the institute for the past 14 years.

Dr Christian K Schneider is currently head of the medical division of the Danish Health and Medicines Authority and will begin working at NIBSC in January 2016.

Dr Ian Hudson, Chief Executive of MHRA said:

“I am delighted to announce that Christian K Schneider will join the institute on 1 January 2016 as director designate, formally taking over as director on 1 April 2016.

“Christian qualified in medicine and previously worked at the Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology, the Paul Ehrlich Institute in Germany and is currently the Medical Head of Division, Medicines Licensing and Availability of the Danish Health and Medicines Authority.

“Christian has a strong scientific background with an extensive publication record and a wealth of experience with a broad range of biological products.

“He is a former chair of the Committee for Advanced Therapies and continues to chair the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) Working Party on Similar Biological Medicinal Products at the European Medicines Agency (EMA) as well as being a former CHMP member."

“I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Stephen for his leadership of NIBSC, which has gone from strength to strength under his directorship, continuing to lead the world in biological standards, making a very significant contribution to public health throughout the world through its work on biological medicines.
