Dr Caroline Vipond
Caroline Vipond, in conjunction with Dr Rory Care and Dr Hannah Chan, leads the meningococcal group at NIBSC and is responsible for the release of meningococcal polysaccharide and protein-based vaccines.
Her primary research interests are studying the content of meningococcal outer membrane vesicle vaccines (OMVs), in particular using proteomic applications to study the protein complement of OMVs. She has published peer reviewed papers and presented at international conferences on this subject.
More recently, with the licensure of the first vaccine containing an OMV, Caroline has been developing assays for safety and consistency testing of this novel vaccine. These assays will have further use for other complex vaccines both currently licensed and being developed for human use.
In addition, Caroline oversees the panel of meningococcal reference material including production of WHO international standards.
Caroline has worked at NIBSC since 2001 after working for a medical diagnostics company in Cardiff. She obtained her PhD from Imperial College London in 2010 and degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Bath in 1999.
